So, you’re thinking about taking the plunge into affiliate marketing, but your bank account is looking a little lean? First off, I’ve been there, and frankly, it’s actually a blessing in disguise. If you have a massive budget, it might be easy to get lazy and just throw money into advertising (perhaps even ads you don’t need). Starting on a budget is different. You’re forced to learn the actual skills that make this business work long-term, and that’s a good thing.
What if you thought of affiliate marketing like a digital matchmaker. You’re not selling products so much as you’re connecting people who have a problem with a solution that makes sense for them. And the best part? You can get the whole thing going without spending a fortune. One of the attractions of affiliate marketing for sure.

When I started, I didn’t have much money to spend, but I also didn’t know very much. Here is how I’d do it if I were starting over today with almost $0, but with the benefit of the experience I’ve gained.
Pick a Corner of the Internet to Call Home
Before you do anything, you need to decide who you’re talking to. In the industry, we call this a “niche,” but let’s just call it your “topic.” The biggest mistake I see people make is trying to be everything to everyone. If you try to recommend protein powder, leaf blowers, and mascara all on the same page, it looks very unprofessional, and trust will be hard to gain.
Pick something you actually like or—even better—something you have experience with, even if it’s just a little experience. If you’ve spent the last three years learning how to grow tomatoes in small apartments, maybe that is your goldmine. You can literally turn your hobby into a business with a little time and training. You don’t need to be a world-class expert; you just need to be a couple of steps ahead of the person you’re helping.
Find Your “Partners” (For Free)
You don’t need to pay for fancy affiliate networks to get started. Most big brands have their own programs you can join for free. Amazon Associates is the classic starting point because everyone knows and trusts Amazon, even if the commissions are a bit lower.
If you want higher payouts, look for digital products or software. Sites like Awin or Impact host thousands of different brands. My advice? Only sign up for things you would actually tell your best friend to buy. If the product is junk, your reputation will be too, and in this business, trust and reputation are a priceless currency.
Build Your “Home Base” Without Breaking the Bank
You’ll see a lot of “gurus” telling you that you need a $100/month website builder and a $2,000 course. You don’t.
If you really want a professional blog, you can get hosting for the price of a couple of lattes a month. But if you’re truly on a $0 budget, start where the people already are. Use platforms like Medium or a dedicated Substack newsletter. Even a totally free and simple Blogger site will do to get things started. They handle the technical stuff for you so you can focus on the one thing that actually makes money: content. By the way, here’s a blogger site I started some years ago that has undergone several iterations, and it’s totally free. I don’t use it much any more, but I never deleted it.
Just a heads-up: if you use these platforms, make sure you follow their rules about affiliate links. Most are fine with them as long as you aren’t being “spammy” and you include a clear disclaimer that you might earn a commission.
Content: The Secret Sauce
This is where the magic happens. You don’t need a fancy camera or a film crew. You just need to be helpful.
The best way to start is by answering questions. Go to places like Reddit or Quora and see what people are struggling with in your niche. If you’re the “tomato guy,” look for people asking why their leaves are turning yellow. Write a post on your blog or social media answering that specific question, and naturally mention the specific organic fertilizer or soil test kit you use.
Another great strategy is the “Alternative To” post. People are always looking for cheaper or better versions of popular products. If you can show them a great alternative that you’ve personally used, they’ll love you for it.
Slow and Steady Wins
I’m going to be really honest with you: affiliate marketing isn’t a “get rich by the end of the week” kind of deal. Since you aren’t using paid ads to “buy” traffic, you’re relying on “organic” traffic which takes time to build.
Focus on being consistent. If you can only manage one really high-quality post a week, do that. It’s much better than posting five mediocre things that don’t help anyone. Over time, Google and social media algorithms will start to recognize you as a helpful resource, and your traffic will start to grow, and eventually even snowball.
A Quick Note on Ethics
Always, always disclose your affiliate links. It’s not just a legal requirement; it’s a trust thing. Some advocate putting a little note at the top of each post saying something like, “Hey, some of the links below are affiliate links, which means I might get a small commission if you buy something—at no extra cost to you. This helps keep the lights on!” Personally, I just include my disclosure in the content on my “About Me” page, which is totally acceptable.
People appreciate the honesty. In fact, if they like your content, they’ll often go out of their way to use your link just to say thanks.
Just Start
The biggest hurdle isn’t the money; it’s the “analysis paralysis.” You can spend months reading about affiliate marketing, or you can spend thirty minutes today picking a topic and writing your first helpful post.
You’ve got this. Start small, stay helpful, and watch how those first few dollars—even if it’s just enough for a cup of coffee—feel like the most rewarding money you’ve ever earned.
